My father was never a prolific storyteller and very down-to-earth when it came to ghosts etc. He confessed to seeing something once, though, which made my ears prick up since this doubter thought he had experienced something. He worked at the laundry and, after finishing work, would head to the Weaver Lodge for a quick pint.
One grey, winter evening he took the short trip in his Ford Anglia from work and drove up the drive to the pub. Halfway up, he says he saw an ‘upside-down black whirlwind’ or vortex of something akin to smoke the size of a man moving slowly down the drive. Dad being Dad, he decided to run it over. It went straight through the car with a howl and the interior of the car became freezing, so cold in fact the inside of the windscreen froze. He had a large whiskey chaser that night!
There are many accounts of ghosts at the Lodge, and I wonder if this sighting was in fact a woman in a large, Victorian skirt or something similar.
Another bizarre ghost sighting comes from a former employee at ‘The Lodge’. Her job after closing hours was to clear tables. On one occasion, in the lounge, she walked into the alcove next to the door, to find a man levitating cross-legged over a table … the mind boggles!
And there is the tale of the evening the Weaver Lodge rose from the rubble ..... watch this space.
