A50 Angel
We are all used to the A50 with all its noise and heavy traffic twenty-four-seven. But it has not always been like this. Plans to upgrade the single carriageway road were put in place before the war and the new carriageway foundations could be walked in safety for 50 years before it was finally finished!
After the initial period of construction the new road, although complete, was practically deserted for a couple of years, especially at night, before hauliers and travelers cottoned on to the fact it was actually there and an easy link between the M6 and M1. Our story was narrated to me of an event that took place in those quieter years.
Dave Smith (not his real name) was driving home to Uttoxeter on a cloudless and moonless night in winter, on a stretch of deserted road. It was around 3AM as he approached the elevated part of the road above Checkley. His radio suddenly became full of static. He fiddled with the tuning knobs but could get a signal back.
When he looked up he saw a glow in the sky ahead to the east. But it was far too early for pre-dawn light. The light was now clearly not on the horizon, but in the sky and descending. About half a mile away Dave could see a large billowing and vaporous cloud-like fog, with an object glowing in the centre. He slowed his truck as he approached.
The cloud had now hit the road and the object, which was a figure, hovering above it. Dave was left breathless. What he saw was what we would think was an angel. It hovered with arms crossed, wings half-folded, and curiously looking down towards Checkley.
Dave had the impression that he was actually intruding on something and was not the focus of this ‘angels’ attention. At least not for a few seconds. Then the angel turned its face toward him, he could see no facial features but a bright glow. Then it opened its arms and stretched out its wings.
Dave says he felt like he was drowning in a tsunami of emotions. His breath was taken away and he was engulfed in what he says felt like intense grief. He lost consciousness and woke up parked in a lay by crying profusely.
It was dawn when he woke. He had lost three hours and says he felt emotionally drained by his encounter.
So what did Dave see? Was it an angel or something his mind could not deal with and converted it to a mental reference we all have tucked away, one of an angel?
